Updating the Recreation Master Plan for the Fremont Area
In 2001, the City of Fremont, Dayton Township, and Sheridan Charter Township joined together to develop and adopt the Fremont Area Recreation Master Plan. This plan has helped the local governments provide recreational opportunities for the residents of the Fremont Community in the most efficient, effective and fiscally responsible manner. Recently, the three local governments as well as Sherman Township began the process of updating the Recreation Plan. The updated plan will provide the framework under which the four local governments will develop parks, build new facilities and provide recreation programming for the next five years.
What Is The Process For Developing A Comprehensive Plan?
The development of the updated Fremont Area Recreation Master Plan is guided by the Fremont Area Park & Recreation Committee. Consisting of representatives from all four jurisdictions, the Committee is facilitating a public planning process that encourages citizen participation and provides citizens an opportunity to shape a plan that is unique to the Fremont Community. The process began with public notification to alert citizens and interested groups. Next, the community began several activities in a public planning process, including: an evaluation of existing conditions, community visioning and goal setting discussions, the selection of goals and objectives and the development of a comprehensive 5-year capital improvement schedule. The identification of projects in the capital improvement schedule can help to build support for local funding or leverage funding from state granting agencies. Some of the facilities outlined in the previous capital improvement plan included the Town & Country Path, Fremont Skate/Bike Park and the Sheridan Township Boat Launch & Playground. Once a draft of the proposed recreation plan is complete it will be placed in the Fremont Public Library for public review and comment (Feb. 15th).
After a brief final revision period and formal public hearing (March 19th), the Recreation Committee will submit the plan to each legislative body for their approval. Once the plan is adopted it will be filed with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. At that point, the Recreation Committee and the governments may begin to implement the plan.
How Do I Get Involved?
If you did not have an opportunity to participate in tonight's meeting, or if there is a topic or issue that you feel is important but was not discussed tonight, please submit your comments and suggestions on the project website. As previously stated, a formal public hearing will be held March 19, 2007. In addition, citizens are encouraged to attend the upcoming meetings of the committee. Committee meetings are also held in the City of Fremont Municipal Building.
